Irwin Altman

B.A., M.A., Ph.D., Distinguished Professor of Psychology, Professor of Family and Consumer Studies

Professor Altman has been a faculty member since 1969. He has served as vice president for academic affairs, dean of the College of Social and Behavioral Science, and chairperson of the Department of Psychology. His many honors include the university's Distinguished Research Award; Distinguished Service Award in Social Sciences, Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters; Career Award of the Environmental Design Research Association; and Superior Research Award, College of Social and Behavioral Science. He is senior editor of a series of 13 volumes on human behavior and the environment, co-editor of the first international Handbook of Environmental Psychology, and the author of four books and numerous scholarly articles.

 

Professor Altman is a fellow of the American Psychological Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Psychological Society. He has been described as a creative problem-solver, a proactive visionary and a teacher who is able to draw out excellence and creative achievements in others. "He approaches teaching as thoughtfully and wisely as he conducts his research," a fellow professor notes. His scholarship, research and teaching emphasize a cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural approach to the understanding of social interaction and the relationship between people and the physical environments of homes,communities and public places.
