He is widely respected for his research in organic chemistry, where he has received national and international acclaim. His research has been reported in nearly 300 refereed scientific publications, and he regularly is invited to speak at conferences held all over the world. His research program brings both fiscal support and prestige to the university.
Professor Stang is the recipient of the University of Utah Distinguished Research Award, the Governor's Medal for Science and Technology, the Alexander von Humboldt Senior U.S. Scientist Award, and honorary doctorates from the Russian Academy of Sciences and Moscow State University. He has given the Weisberger-Williams Lectureship at Eastman Kodak Company, was BASF Visiting Professor in Kaiserlautern, Germany, served as Fulbright-Hays Senior Scholar in Zagreb, Yugoslavia, and as Lady Davis Visiting Professor in Haifa, Israel. He is an associate editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society, the world's pre-eminent research journal for chemistry, and serves on numerous national and international advisory boards.
